This book presents five stories centered around a street piano placed in a sunlit hall of a shopping mall. Various people—an ambitious high school boy, a lonely wife, a heartbroken elderly man, an independent young woman, and others—take turns playing the piano, each carrying their own hopes and wishes.
The piano responds to the players and the listeners with warm, uplifting tones that gently encourage everyone.
A collection of quietly moving stories.

Nude to Aikoku (Nudes and Patriotism)

This book explores the representation of the nude in modern Japanese art, including painting, photography, film, and advertising posters.
Ranging from the three beauties depicted in Kuroda Seiki’s Meiji‑era oil paintings to contemporary PARCO posters directed by Ishioka Eiko, the author analyzes numerous examples from social and cultural perspectives.
The findings suggest that modern Japanese depictions of the nude often share an image of sacred femininity, exemplified by the iconic figure Chieko in Selection of Wisdom. Although regimes have attempted to use the nude for political purposes, beauty ultimately proves stronger than dogma.

This book is an insider account of the former Unification Church written by an ex-believer. Although the author’s experience was tragic, readers may sometimes find it almost comedic. Yet every episode is a true story.
The government has ordered the Church to be stripped of its status as a legally recognized religious organization.

No Reply from Venus / Astronauci (Stanisław Herman Lem, 1951) This 75‑year‑old science‑fiction novel remains fascinating thanks to its enduring theme: “Encounter with the Unknown.”
Humanity discovers that the Tunguska explosion was caused by an AI probe from Venus, and a crew of astronauts sets out on an atomic powered spaceship to investigate.
When they finally reach the planet, however, they find no alien civilization—Venusian had already perished long before their arrival.
From today’s perspective, the description of the planet is clearly outdated, yet the sense of wonder that permeates the novel feels remarkably fresh. Lem’s faith in human potential and cooperation still resonates strongly even now.

A young samurai successfully avenges his father by killing the villain in front of the public in Kobikichō, the actors’ district. Behind this officially sanctioned act of revenge, however, lie many intertwined human dramas.
The unexpectedly heartwarming ending left me feeling genuinely happy. A film based on the novel will be released this coming February. I’m eager to see it.

中島敦の「虎狩」は、かの「山月記」に至る実体験を描いた創作秘話とも読める。
白眉は、やはり萩原朔太郎の「猫町」、日常の中にふと垣間見える異世界談の魅力は古びない。

□STAP細胞に群がった悪いヤツら（小畑峰太郎 2014）
日本中を一時、歓喜の嵐に巻き込んだ（お手軽に作れる）万能細胞、STEP細胞の雑誌「ネーチャー」への掲載（2014）とその後の凋落、日本最大の研究のミスコンダクトをジャーナリストが追った記録。あれからもう１０年以上たったのだなあ。
中心人物の小保方氏はともかく、彼女を取り巻いていた理研の錚々たる科学者が何故このブードゥーサイエンスを見抜けなかったのか、それが騒ぎが終わってからの僕の一番の関心事だった。
本書では、科学界と産業界、政界の悪しき馴れ合いや、巨大サイエンスそれ自体が巨額の権益を生む一大産業と化していることなど、事件を取り巻く背景が子細に分析されているが、「なぜ騙されたか」あるいは「何故だまし通せると思ったのか」という野次馬的好奇心は満たされなかった。
結局の処、人間は「見たいものしか見ない」ということであろうか？

□図書館長GAZIN菊池の妄想のビートルズと日本文学（菊池雅人 2025）
仙台の図書館長が利用者に向けた講演を一冊にまとめた読書の勧め。
ビートルズなどのヒット曲とそれに触発された日本文学、あるいは逆に小説に触発された歌謡曲、はたまた大事件に想を得た文学作品と楽曲などが紹介されている。
ビートルズものの小説と言えば「ノルウェイの森（村上春樹）」が最も有名だが、タイトルが曲名（日本版）「ノルウェーの森」とは微妙に違うことや、松本清張作品を思わせる「天城越え（歌 石川さゆり））」、昭和史に残る３億円事件をTVドラマ化した「悪魔のようなあいつ」の主題歌「時の過ぎゆくままに（歌 沢田研二）」などが紹介されて、ちょっとしたトリビア集となっている。

□いまこそガーシュイン（中山七里 2023）
「このミステリーがすごい」大賞を受賞した「さよならドビュッシー（2010）」の作者による音楽ミステリー。第一次トランプ政権時を思わせるアメリカで、米国人ピアニスト エドワードとガーシュインのピアノデュオを奏でるスーパーピアニスト岬は、寸前に大統領暗殺を阻止する、というお話。
実は奇しくも最近、クラリネットとピアノや２台のピアノによるガーシュインの二重奏をコンサートで聴いたばかりなので、とても臨場感を持ってこの小説を楽しめた。
