Typhoon ― 2026/06/03 15:20
Typhoon in June
Today's English lesson was postponed because the first typhoon of the year hit the Japanese islands.
Usually, typhoons are seasonal events in autumn, but this one came in early June.
These days, extreme climate events are becoming unpredictable.
It's quite troublesome.

Refrigerators ― 2026/05/16 23:49
That’s a good boy — or should I say, a good machine!
I suddenly realized that refrigerators are the toughest appliances in the house.
They never take a single break during their entire service life.
The compressor keeps running for more than 15 years, so I feel like saying,
“Good job, buddy — you’ve earned it!”

NHK-One ― 2026/05/16 23:07
A Way to Cast NHK-One
Since I couldn’t cast NHK-One from my iPad to my TV using either my old Chromecast or a Thunderbolt–HDMI cable, I followed some advice on the internet and tried connecting my laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable.
In the end, it worked!
The laptop-to-TV connection is a bit troublesome, though.

The Sheep Detectives ― 2026/05/14 23:07
Movie Report The Sheep Detectives (2026, Sony Pictures)
A sheep farmer in England is murdered. A flock of his beloved sheep, hand in hand (or hoof in hand), team up with a human police officer to investigate the case and eventually arrest the killer.
It’s a crime story with a terrible incident at its core, yet the film remains surprisingly heartwarming.
The CG‑animated sheep and other farm animals are terrific. Hugh Jackman plays the murdered sheep farmer—ironically, he once played the Wolverine in X-men.

Goodbye ― 2026/05/07 23:14
A Day for Goodbye
Wak-san and I went to Kawasaki Hokubu Saien funeral hall to see off our old huckleberry friend, Kmy-san. Since he had no close relatives, we were the only ones there.
We sent his coffin into the crematory and placed his bones into an urn after the pyre. It was a quiet, fitting day for goodbye.

Bears ― 2026/05/05 20:20
Are Bears Becoming Ubiquitous?
Spring has come, and bears have woken up from their long winter sleep.
Their habitat used to be limited to forests, mountains, and deep bushes, but this spring we’ve been seeing them all over the country.
Sightings of bears in towns and cities have become common.
Are bears going to become as ubiquitous in our lives as personal computers?

Sad News ― 2026/05/04 23:23
Sudden Death
Yesterday, I heard that my ex‑colleague had suddenly collapsed at a station, and today the news turned even worse. I was informed that he passed away.
I never expected his death — he was only 75, and my friends and I enjoyed a Christmas party with him just last year. He seemed perfectly healthy then.
So, I am frightened and deeply saddened by his sudden death.
The news reminds me of the simple fact that we are all mortal.
R.I.P. to Kmy-san.

Incinerator ― 2026/05/02 20:02
Zookeeper’s Murder Case
A man working at Asahiyama Zoo has been arrested. The zookeeper is suspected of murdering his wife.
As I have visited the zoo before, the news frightened me. According to reports, the suspect may have killed his wife and burned her body in the zoo’s incinerator.
I hope this crime will not have adverse effects on the zoo’s operations or its animals.

How to Drink Wine ― 2026/05/02 03:34
How to Drink Wine Deliciously
I may have found the easiest way to enjoy wine.
As a precaution for my health, I changed my daily drinking habit to drinking every other day. On the off days, I drink alcohol‑free beer. And I realized how much better wine tastes after a dry day.
In other words, the dry days actually enhance the flavor of the wine.
Leaving a one‑ or two‑day gap between drinking days may be the best way to enjoy wine, since it’s good for both our health and our wallet.

Sunday Art Museum ― 2026/05/01 20:21
Sunday Art Museum 50th Anniversary Exhibition
I visited an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the popular NHK TV program Sunday Art Museum. Many masterpieces that had once been featured on the show were on display.
Visitors are greeted at the entrance by a magical Jōmon clay pot, and at the end of the exhibition they encounter an optical reproduction of Picasso’s Guernica, after walking through works by Eastern and Western artists across time.
The exhibition leads viewers to sense both the beginnings of art and one of its monumental achievements. I was also impressed by a painting by Tarō Okamoto, the Japanese avant‑garde artist who deeply appreciated both Jōmon aesthetics and Picasso’s work.
