Typhoon in June

Today's English lesson was postponed because the first typhoon of the year hit the Japanese islands.
Usually, typhoons are seasonal events in autumn, but this one came in early June. These days, extreme climate events are becoming unpredictable.
    It's quite troublesome.

Are Bears Becoming Ubiquitous?

Spring has come, and bears have woken up from their long winter sleep. Their habitat used to be limited to forests, mountains, and deep bushes, but this spring we’ve been seeing them all over the country.
Sightings of bears in towns and cities have become common. Are bears going to become as ubiquitous in our lives as personal computers?

Zookeeper’s Murder Case

A man working at Asahiyama Zoo has been arrested. The zookeeper is suspected of murdering his wife.
As I have visited the zoo before, the news frightened me. According to reports, the suspect may have killed his wife and burned her body in the zoo’s incinerator.
I hope this crime will not have adverse effects on the zoo’s operations or its animals.

Swan Family

Today, I saw the birth of new baby swans in the park.
Six cygnets were with their mother.
    So cute.

He Has a Name.

I saw a goat browsing on the grass in the yard of Owl Shrine.
Passersby affectionately called him Yagizo (“Uncle Goat”). It might actually be his name. I gently petted Yagizo’s neck.

Municipal Subsidy2026/04/22 17:52

A 5,000-yen Subsidy per Resident

I received a notice from the city’s welfare division.
According to the letter, the city will provide a 5,000‑yen subsidy to residents to help with living expenses.
Although I will gladly accept the subsidy, I feel there are many other ways our tax money could be used, such as maintaining aging infrastructure like the water system, roads, and garbage incinerators.
Is the subsidy a populist instrument?

Katsuta won again!

Takamoto Katsuta won the Croatia Rally in the World Rally Championship, following his first victory at the Safari Rally just a month ago.
These back‑to‑back wins have taken the Japanese driver to the top of the championship standings.
    So cooooooool!!

Scam Call2026/03/25 11:50

Why Nagoya?

Recently, I’ve been getting automated phone calls saying, “This is Nagoya Customs. Press #1.”
It’s obviously a scam. It’s annoying, but I just ignore it.

Morning Set Menu

The morning set was 700 yen, since I ordered the grilled salmon set for breakfast. Even fast‑food places are getting expensive these days.
